Kat Brock is a visual artist and musician, though she might not be the first to tell you about it; which is also to say, she might not tell you about it first. To those who know Kat well, she is first a friend, a partner, a sister, a mother, a counselor. Art, and the creativity from which it is born, is not one of Kat's pursuits, occupations, or dreams. It is a way of life, a meditation, an exercise in the interest of balance -or therapy.
Growing up in Knoxville, Tennessee, Kat Brock would bear her highs, her loves, and her innermost struggles through a number of local bands (Sub Blue Collar, Whiskey Scars, and Dixie Dirt among others) quietly achieving the status of a local legend as she toured nationally and wrote one critically acclaimed record after another. But as careerist ambitions peaked, Kat found herself missing the parts of her art, and her life, she felt were most important. The dissolution of Dixie Dirt that followed flowed seamlessly into an unexpected pregnancy, the discovery of true love and devotion, and an unwavering commitment to sobriety.
The art and music Kat Brock now creates continues to demonstrate a certain honesty and simplicity that has always characterized her work. However, those familiar with previous offerings may notice the subtle ways her angst and yearning have been tempered by family life, and the acquisition of an everyday existence that is both healthy and enduring.
