Pop Matters Reviews Own Side Now by Caitlin Rose

“So how do you know when someone is genuinely steeped in a genre, when they find focus in both learning tradition and crafting their own space within it? Well, you’ll know when you hear a singer like Caitlin Rose. When I say she is a country singer, I don’t say that to exclude all the other things she is at the same time—a clever wordsmith, a pop siren, a charming frontwoman. No, I say it because she embodies the soul of a country singer in all the best ways. The young Nashvillian’s debut album, Any Side Now (available last year in Europe, and now finally released in the states) is country without being quaint, poppy as all hell but never overly light, twangy in a way we recognize but not by the numbers.”

American Songwriter reviews the new album by Caitlin Rose. Own Side Now will be available in the States two weeks from today!

“One can imagine the massive wardrobe necessary for Caitlin Rose when she plays her new album, Own Side Now, live. The 23-year-old singer-songwriter’s full-length debut has been out since August in the United Kingdom, where she’s a critic’s darling, but is only now making it Stateside. Remember the name, and all her musical costumes: Rose is a talent who’s sure to be around for a while.”

Magnet Magazine: MP3 At 3PM: And The Relatives

Magnet Magazine is a giving away a free mp3 from Green Machinery, the new album by And The Relatives.

They had the following to say…

“Since 2006, Nashville’s And The Relatives have quietly garnered a steady stream of support from Music City all the way to the far-flung editorial salons of Spin, which in 2009 proclaimed ATR one of “eight undiscovered bands worth a listen.” And deservedly so: The trio’s austere, riff-heavy indie rock, which has drawn comparisons to Pavement, the Walkmen, the Black Keys and Spoon, is a refreshing antidote to the chillwaving listlessness that has defined so much of the music that’s been hotly tipped by critics in recent years. After self-releasing two well-received EPs, the band this year teamed up with YK Records and Theory 8 to release its debut LP, Green Machinery, a fuzzy, rollicking collection that is more sophisticated than it initially lets on. Indeed, just as prevalent as its garage-baked carelessness is an undeniable penchant for songcraft. “Hammer Down,” in particular, has been stuck in our heads for weeks.”

Keegan DeWitt LOVE from Spinner AND Paste...

Keegan DeWitt’s video for Two Hearts is Spinner’s Video of the Day!

He also made Paste’s Top 10 Best New Solo Artist list at #9!

“Keegan DeWitt studied film in college, but perhaps he should have been an English major. Though he first made his name by composing movie scores, and then as a member of rootsy rock-group Roman Candle, his first two solo albums are rife with literary references and inspiration. His most recent EP, Nothing Shows, released in July, was influenced by the poetry of Philip Larkin and boasts folksy, upbeat tracks with a cinematic edge.

DeWitt hopes to head to Europe again to gather some literary inspiration for his next EP, to be released sometime this winter. “I’ve been digging through all this different stuff and I have to figure out what the next piece is,” he says. “I think it has to start from removing myself and going someplace, again.”—Caroline Klibanoff

And The Relatives - Regal Son

Check out the new video from their Green Machinery LP, available now. Buy the LP courtesy of yk records now!

Big thanks to our friends at YVYNYL for premiering the video today: “These Nashvillians write angular indie rock. That’s certainly not calling them square. It’s more that they’re sculpting from granite sounds and the finished product is sharp, but timeless. Somewhere between Spoon and Springsteen.”

Nashville Scene: Always pushing, Keegan DeWitt gets inspired through collaboration on new 7-inch...

“…the new material, featured on a new 7-inch record from Theory 8, seems to have grown in new ways as a result: “Two Hearts” recalls Phoenix’s penchant for indelibly warm, taut guitar pop — “Hearts Beat Loud” had traces of this shift, but was slightly more subdued — while B-side “Reluctance” is a shimmering, reverb-drenched duet with Isaaca Byrd of The Bridges, who plays in his live band. A mutual rawness, or pluck, permeates both songs — as if DeWitt happened upon a confidence this year that matches his ambition. Indeed, it’s not that these songs are necessarily more accomplished than anything on Islands or Nothing Shows. Rather, they herald the sound of a writer growing into his own, leveraging the rich framework of his past to inform the inspired promise of his future. Given his intriguing story, it’d be a shame if it were any other way.” - Ryan Burleson

Caitlin Rose's UK Release Ranks #1 on Nashville Scene's Top Album List of 2010

#1 Caitlin Rose
Own Side Now (Names) No record appeared on more ballots, or garnered more No. 1 nominations, than Caitlin Rose’s excellent Own Side Now — no shabby feat, considering that it’s still only available in Nashville as an import. And perhaps no surprise, considering how nearly universal the praise from the U.K. and Europe has been. Ironically, in a year when so many of our indie bands hit the road with a raw rock ‘n’ roll sound scraped from the city’s garage and basement floors, the album that captured Nashville’s critical heart was a throwback, of sorts, to golden-age country music. Of course, Own Side Now is no retro re-enactment. Sure, there are shades of Patsy and Loretta, but Rose is a savvy writer who doesn’t paint herself into corners. For every beer-destined tear there is a postcard from another pop-music landmark taped to the mirror behind the bar — from the sighing strings and ’60s girl-group keyboard twinkle of “For the Rabbits” to the cosmic American shuffle of album stand-out “Shanghai Cigarettes.” “I’m on my own side now,” Rose sings on the title track, and this year, we’re merely among the many jumping in line behind her. —Steve Haruch
