Great mention of Caitlin Rose from The Independent in London today:

"But the line between alt.country and the mainstream is blurring by the day. The most exciting act in Nashville right now is a 21-year-old singer-songwriter called Caitlin Rose. A sort of Loretta/Dolly/Patsy for the Lily Allen generation, Rose is at the forefront of a vibrant country scene driven by young people with open ears and a musical knowledge that stretches from the Carter Family to Kurt Cobain.

Crucially, Rose's songs about white-trash romance ("Shotgun Wedding", "Docket") or noticing that packets of cigarettes can last longer than relationships ("Shanghai Cigarettes") are as likely to make you titter in your bitter as they are to put tears in your beers. Asked to name her own favourite new country acts, Rose reels off a list that includes Justin (son of Steve) Earle, Deer Tick, Phosphorescent, Glossary and Dawes. All, like Rose, make music that nods to the old ways while taking the genre in entirely new directions."

theory 8 is excited to announce the free release of Kat Brock's EP entitled C today.

The three song EP is available for a free download from Bandcamp. Kat is also selling a physical copy of the album at shows.

Speaking of shows, Nashville can see Kat perform at The Basement this Friday at 9:30 (Kat is playing first).

We've been a fan of Kat's since her days fronting the legendary Dixie Dirt in Knoxville, TN. We were excited to see her pair up with our old friend Simon Lynn (drummer from The Whole Fantastic World) on this EP. Keep an eye out for more releases from Kat in 2010.

Just a quick note saying Happy New Year from everyone here at theory 8.

We aren't going to lie, we have some really great things lined up this year, some of which are going to be total surprises while others have been in the works since 2009.

Most notably we're beefing up our release schedule with new albums from And The Relatives, De Novo Dahl and The Winter Sounds, all before the summer.

And we have a few other items up in the air from other artists that we will be announcing very shortly.

So stick around in 2010 as we prepare for our busiest year yet.

We've posted it many times before and we really can't say enough how much we love Shanghai Cigarettes by Caitlin Rose, but today we have the opportunity to see the song's debut performance live with a full band and we couldn't be happier.

One of current obsessions in the theory 8 office...

Nashville Cream has a great live review of the new De Novo Dahl show from Monday night:

"Speaking of world domination, the new De Novo Dahl lineup is just a couple of helicopters and a WMD away from achieving that end as well. The small army of musicians that have joined the re-emergent Joel J. Dahl and Serai Zaffiro--The De Novo Dahl Symphony Orchestra, as we like to call 'em--were full of the energy and melody that has made each of DND's previous incarnations so exciting, but this time they're not nearly as goofy. We'll miss making Muppet jokes, but we're glad the pajama costumes are gone. Now there's nothing interfering with our enjoyment of the Raspberries-meet-End-of-the-Century-era-Ramones pop goodness."

Do not forget you can get three FREE songs from Bandcamp now!

This Monday morning, we're stretching our legs, shaking off the weekend rest and ready to jump in head first.

The best way to get the week started (in our humble opinion) is by checking out two great songs by And The Relatives from American Songwriter.

While listening to the new track Fourth Rate, we get excited about the upcoming LP in 2010. Are we the only ones singing "You were never my baby, just a fourth rate love affair!"?

And don't miss the Townes Van Zandt cover of Be Here To Love Me featuring the back ground vocals of our own Caitlin Rose. It's been rattling around in our brains for a few weeks now.

Tonight in Nashville at The Basement, And The Relatives will be opening for White Denim! 9pm

Our friends over at You Ain't No Picasso posted a link to Caitlin's cover of Still Feelin Blue by Gram Parsons.

They were also kind of enough to post about De Novo Dahl's three new songs released on Monday.

We heart YANP! You should too.

Have a great weekend!!!
