Bobby Thompson Reels, Vol. 1
Bobby Thompson Reels, Vol. 1

De Novo Dahl is releasing a free four song ep entitled Bobby Thompson Reels, Vol. 1 available now from their Bandcamp page.

The mostly instrumental EP contains music from the production reels of Nashville musician, Bobby Thompson, the uncle of Rob Rickman. Below is a description of the EP by Rob himself.

During the later part of 2005, I set about transferring the seemingly countless reels of tape that belonged to my deceased uncle, Nashville sessionman Bobby Thompson. Bobby was (is) a legendary banjo player and was also brilliant on the guitar, as he logged countless session hours with the likes of Chet Atkins, Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, Ray Charles, Jim & Jesse, Paul McCartney, Elvis, Carl Perkins, Loretta Lynn, Bill Monroe, Les Paul, Neil Young and innumerable others. First through exposure to his work on Hee-Haw, then through the amazing Area Code 615, and subsequently through these reels loaned by my aunt, whom he married in the early 1980’s, I became increasingly aware of my humble uncle’s notoriety.

Bobby passed away in May of 2005 after living with multiple sclerosis for the better part of two decades, during which time he lost his ability to play music. Following his death, I visited my aunt and learned of these reels that are largely comprised of unreleased material. An amateur audio archivist, I undertook transferring them to digital format as a way of ensuring that his work would be preserved for generations to come, while also wanting to allow my aunt to hear any given piece without having to fire up the reel-to-reel player.

Being rather obsessed with finding samples at the time, Joel J. Dahl and I heard lots of potential in these reels that dated from the 1950’s through the 80’s. Several years had passed when Joel informed me this past fall that he intended to release a De Novo Dahl EP centered on samples from the reels that he had started to piece together four years ago. Though I’m biased, this is such a cool, unique project. I’m very grateful to Joel for putting his energy into it. Thanks also to Judy and Bobby, for whom this project is dedicated. I hope that you enjoy it.

- Rob Rickman, Jr.

Bobby Thompson Reels, Vol. 1, is the second free EP release from De Novo Dahl following the City Driver EP release back in November of 2009. The band will also be releasing a full length LP in May entitled Tigerlion available from theory 8 records. In July, De Novo Dahl and The Family Tree will begin their Full Deck Project featuring a regular release of free songs. More information on Full Deck to follow...

De Novo Dahl will be performing at Mercy Lounge in Nashville, TN, on Saturday, April 24th.

Great mention of Caitlin Rose from The Independent in London today:

"But the line between alt.country and the mainstream is blurring by the day. The most exciting act in Nashville right now is a 21-year-old singer-songwriter called Caitlin Rose. A sort of Loretta/Dolly/Patsy for the Lily Allen generation, Rose is at the forefront of a vibrant country scene driven by young people with open ears and a musical knowledge that stretches from the Carter Family to Kurt Cobain.

Crucially, Rose's songs about white-trash romance ("Shotgun Wedding", "Docket") or noticing that packets of cigarettes can last longer than relationships ("Shanghai Cigarettes") are as likely to make you titter in your bitter as they are to put tears in your beers. Asked to name her own favourite new country acts, Rose reels off a list that includes Justin (son of Steve) Earle, Deer Tick, Phosphorescent, Glossary and Dawes. All, like Rose, make music that nods to the old ways while taking the genre in entirely new directions."

Just a quick note saying Happy New Year from everyone here at theory 8.

We aren't going to lie, we have some really great things lined up this year, some of which are going to be total surprises while others have been in the works since 2009.

Most notably we're beefing up our release schedule with new albums from And The Relatives, De Novo Dahl and The Winter Sounds, all before the summer.

And we have a few other items up in the air from other artists that we will be announcing very shortly.

So stick around in 2010 as we prepare for our busiest year yet.
